Throughout our careers, we have been exposed to so many companies that were poised for significant growth but, until growth arrived, they were buried by fixed production and administration costs that precluded significant profitability. CEO's and business owners have repeatedly bemoaned their high break-even points --- even after conducting yet another reduction-in-force or plant closure. They always knew that their problems would be gone if they could only sell more. Unfortunately, that left them victims of such uncontrollable things as economic trends, the next tax bill, market impacts of terrorist threats and weather.
We believe that there is a much better way to "move to the next level" --- that level that countless companies have told us they are trying to reach. Eliminating internal functions, reports, benefits or plants are not necessarily the way to go --- even though just about every company seems to have done that.
Every company has essential functions that can't be eliminated. But so many of those essential functions represent fixed costs --- costs that will not be eliminated in even another reduction in force --- unless the function can be ceased altogether. And eliminating functions is very painful and often not productive. We believe that our approach results in maximum profits and minimum risk --- in any business cycle.
We believe in managing for maximum profit at any volume. The companies referred to above were poised for profit at high volume. But most any company can do that. But profit at ANY volume requires a relentless pursuit of reduced fixed costs WITHOUT forfeiting the services or functions performed in those traditionally fixed cost roles.
